Hemp Seed Oil: Balanced Omega Care That Will Not Clog Pores
Hemp seeds are no stranger to the kitchen, toasted and sprinkled over salads, baked into bread. But today we are talking about a different side of the same seed: a greenish oil obtained through cold pressing, nothing more. The hemp plant (Cannabis sativa) has been cultivated for thousands of years across Central Asia and Europe, valued for its fiber as much as its seed. Let us be clear from the start: the cosmetic oil we use comes strictly from the seed, and it contains no THC, the psychoactive compound found elsewhere in the plant. Just seed, just cold pressing, that is the whole story. Let us also note upfront that we do not sell this oil on its own, in a standalone bottle: hemp seed oil is only one of the cold-pressed plant oils blended with beeswax into our Hand & Foot Care Cream, Heel Cream, Manicure Cream, Ayşe's multi-purpose Cream and Hand & Nail Care Set, and it is also part of our 50 ml Moisturising Skin Care Oil.

The story of hemp is, in many ways, as old as the story of cloth itself. From the lands the Silk Road once crossed, through the Caucasus and into Eastern European villages, this plant was grown mainly for rope and coarse fabric, while its seed was long set aside as a minor by-product. Over time, people realised the oil hidden inside that small seed carried a value of its own, and today it has found its place on the cosmetics shelf.

Why does cold pressing matter so much here? You have probably heard the term with olive oil, and the idea is simple: extract the oil through mechanical pressure alone, without heat or chemical solvents. Heat and solvents can damage the delicate fatty acids and vitamins locked inside a seed. Hemp seed oil is particularly fragile in this sense, its omega fatty acids degrade quickly under high temperatures. So cold pressing is not a marketing choice here, it is close to a necessity.

As for what is inside, the standout feature of hemp seed oil is its near ideal omega-3 to omega-6 ratio, often cited around 1:3. Nature rarely offers this balance, most plant oils lean heavily toward one or the other. The oil also carries small amounts of vitamin E and gamma-linolenic acid, known as GLA. Its texture is light, its color ranges from pale green to a deeper golden shade, and its scent carries a faint, grassy note.

What does this actually do for skin? The balanced fatty acid profile helps support the skin's natural barrier function. Think of that barrier like the exterior plaster on a house wall: the sturdier it is, the better it keeps moisture in and irritants out. Hemp seed oil's light, non-comedogenic texture works to support that barrier without clogging pores. We can say it contributes to skin looking softer, calmer, and more balanced, not as a miracle fix, but as a steady, everyday helper.

Beyond that, the polyunsaturated fatty acids in the oil seem to help skin's elasticity too, so it appears to bounce back more comfortably after being stretched. This is especially noticeable on hands and heels that toughen up in winter, where a light oil like this feels soothing without leaving a heavy layer.

Who benefits most? Combination and oil-prone skin tends to welcome hemp seed oil precisely because it feels so light. At the same time, it works well in creams meant for dry hands, nail beds, elbows, and heels, areas that toughen up with daily wear. In short, it suits skin that dislikes heavy oils just as much as hands that go through a demanding day.

This versatility is exactly why hemp seed oil earns a place in Ülker Sofuoğlu's formulas. Across 38 years of manicure and pedicure work, you learn how valuable a light, balancing oil becomes when caring for both very dry and easily oily skin in the same room. In our creams, it sits alongside other plant oils and beeswax as one of the raw materials that helps deliver the nourishing support skin needs.

A few practical tips are worth sharing. Apply the cream while skin is still slightly damp, right after washing your hands or stepping out of the shower, since this helps the product absorb more easily. A small amount goes a long way, something close to the size of a pea is usually enough for hands and nails. Turning this into an evening ritual is worth considering too: a slow massage over your hands and around the nail beds is a nice way to close out the day, for your skin and for you.

One misunderstanding comes up often: hearing the word hemp, some assume there is some psychoactive effect involved. There is not. The cosmetic oil used here comes only from the seed and contains no THC; it has nothing to do with that other side of the plant.

Another question we hear often is whether the oil feels greasy. Despite what its name suggests, hemp seed oil has a genuinely light texture and leaves no sticky or shiny film once settled into skin. That makes it practical for daytime use, or right before slipping on gloves for outdoor work.

On storage: because of its high content of polyunsaturated fatty acids, hemp seed oil is somewhat sensitive to light and heat. Keeping the cream in a cool spot away from direct sunlight, with the lid tightly closed, helps preserve both its scent and its effectiveness for longer. A drawer in the bedroom is often a better home for it than a steamy bathroom shelf.

Finally, a small reminder: every skin is different. Before trying anything new, test a small area on the inside of your arm first, and if you have a known skin condition, speak with a specialist beforehand. These products are made for everyday care, not treatment. If you would like to try hemp seed oil's balanced character in our creams, a visit to our shop is always welcome.
