Black Seed Oil: Traditional Purifying Care for Balanced Skin
Black seed will feel familiar to many long before it ever touches skincare. Sprinkled on flatbreads, baked into pastries, tucked into the crust of village-style loaves across Anatolia and the wider Middle East, its tiny, dark, faintly peppery seeds have flavored kitchens for centuries. Yet the very same seed has quietly lived a second life, kept in jars and passed down as a household staple across the region, from Anatolia to the Middle East, South Asia and North Africa. Even Ancient Egypt is said to have prized it, with seeds reportedly found among the burial goods of Tutankhamun. What we bottle today as an oil is essentially this old, widely shared tradition distilled down: the seed cold-pressed into a dense, distinctly characterful oil.

Cold pressing matters a great deal here, because black seed carries both aromatic and heat-sensitive components. Pressing at high temperatures can drive off some of these, dulling both the oil's signature scent and its content. Cold pressing keeps the seed unheated, pressed slowly at low temperature, so the oil that reaches the bottle stays closer to the seed's natural composition. In a real sense, this gentle extraction is what makes black seed oil what it is. Worth noting: black seed oil isn't sold on its own here - it is one of the cold-pressed plant oils blended with beeswax, in a carefully measured amount, into Ülker Sofuoğlu's cream formulas.

On the composition side, the best-known compound in black seed oil is thymoquinone, the substance responsible for both its distinctive aroma and much of the interest it draws in cosmetics. Alongside it sit fatty acids such as linoleic acid and oleic acid, plus small amounts of natural antioxidants like vitamin E. This combination is a large part of why the oil is valued in skincare — though to be clear, this is a cosmetic ingredient, not a medicine or a treatment for any condition.

So what does it actually offer the skin? Used regularly and in modest amounts, black seed oil can support a more balanced-looking complexion, help reinforce the skin's barrier, and leave a cleaner, more purified feel. Skin that looks a little tired or dull by the end of the day can benefit from that refreshed sensation. But it's worth repeating: this oil does not "cure" or "eliminate" any skin condition. It offers a balancing, purifying contribution to a daily routine, nothing more.

Black seed oil tends to suit combination and oilier skin, particularly areas that turn shiny over the course of the day. It can also be a helpful addition for rough patches and calluses on heels and feet. Because its scent is quite strong, applying it directly and undiluted to the face in large amounts isn't the most comfortable approach; used in a measured proportion within a cream, it tends to work far more pleasantly.

That's precisely why Ülker Sofuoğlu formulas use black seed oil in a carefully measured amount. Given its intense scent and strong character, we include just enough to draw on its purifying contribution without letting it dominate the balance of the cream. In our thirty-eight years of hands-on tradition, black seed oil joins our other cold-pressed oils and beeswax as one part of a balanced formula, not the star ingredient standing alone.

The same measured approach carries over into how you use it. A cream containing black seed oil works well applied to slightly damp skin as part of an evening ritual; a small amount is all that's needed. On hands and feet, especially around the nail beds and heels, a few minutes of gentle massage helps both with absorption and with unwinding after a long day. If using it on the face, testing a small area first and watching how skin responds is always the safer route.

The most common misunderstanding around black seed oil is the age-old claim that it "cures everything." Those sweeping folk sayings don't apply to a cosmetic product; we use this oil purely as a cosmetic raw material that contributes to skincare, and we make no claim that it treats any illness. Another frequent question concerns the smell — black seed oil naturally carries a noticeably spicy, intense aroma, and that's simply part of its character, not a sign of lost quality.

Storage deserves the same care given to other cold-pressed oils. Keeping the cream in a cool spot away from direct sunlight, cap tightly closed, helps preserve both the freshness of the oils inside and that characteristic scent. Warm, humid spots like a bathroom shelf aren't ideal for oils this intense; a kitchen cabinet or a cool shelf works better. We store the raw black seed oil under the same cool, dark conditions before it ever goes into a formula.

Finally, remember that every skin is different. Before using a product containing black seed oil for the first time, we recommend testing a small area on the inside of your arm and observing how your skin reacts. If you have a known skin sensitivity or condition, checking with a specialist beforehand is always wiser. These products are made for daily care, not as a treatment. If you'd like to experience black seed oil's traditional, purifying touch in Ülker Sofuoğlu's handmade creams, we'd love to welcome you at our store.
