Summer is lovely, but a little tiring for the skin. Sun all day, salty sea, chlorinated pool, plus sweating in the heat. When you get home in the evening, your skin often seems to say, "you were a bit rough on me today": tight, dry, sometimes slightly burnt. The good news is that with a few simple habits you can get through summer without wearing your skin out.

What does the sun do to skin?

The sun's rays upset the skin's moisture balance and wear it over time. That "pulling" feeling after a day at the sea is really a sign of lost water. So the heart of summer care is the same: restore lost moisture and lock it in. Protection comes first, of course; but alongside protection, the repairing care you do in the evening soothes the skin.

After the sea and the pool

Since salt and chlorine dry the skin, rinsing with fresh water after swimming is a good habit. Then, while skin is still slightly damp, applying a care oil or moisturizer balances that dryness. Give extra attention to the most sun-exposed spots like shoulders, décolleté, and face. Cold-pressed plant oils help nourish and soften skin here.

The evening ritual

Summer evenings are a kind of "recovery" time for skin. Gently cleanse away the day's sweat, sunscreen, and dust. Then moisturize generously. At night, while skin renews itself, it absorbs care best; so the oil or cream you apply in the evening returns to you as much more rested skin by morning.

Oil in summer too?

"Won't oil feel heavy in the heat?" you might think. Used in the right amount, no. In summer a small amount, especially in the evening, is enough. Lighter, quickly absorbed oils (sesame, sunflower, macadamia) are more comfortable for summer. A little in the morning and a bit more in the evening suits most skin.

Coolness from within

The most neglected thing in summer is drinking water. We lose a lot of water sweating, but in the heat we sometimes don't even notice we're thirsty. Plenty of water and juicy summer fruits and vegetables greatly support the skin's moisture balance from within. Whatever you apply on top stays half-done if it isn't supported from inside.

A small warning

If your skin is clearly sunburned, with blistering, severe redness, or pain, that's no longer simple dryness; don't push the skin and see a specialist if needed. Care products are for the daily care of healthy skin, not for treating a burn.
