Calendula Oil: Gentle Soothing Care for Sensitive-Looking Skin
There was always a corner of the old village garden where orange calendula flowers bloomed. Grandmothers dried these petals, kept them in jars, and used them for hand and face care through the winter. Let us be clear from the start: we do not sell this oil on its own, in a single bottle. Calendula oil is only one of the cold-pressed plant oils blended with beeswax into the formulas of our Hand & Foot Care Cream, Heel Cream, Manicure Cream, Ayşe's multi-purpose Cream and the Hand & Nail Care Set, and it is also part of the blend in our 50 ml Moisturising Skin Care Oil.

Also known by its Latin name, this golden-orange flower is often called the sun's own bloom in folk tradition, and almost every old village garden kept a patch of it somewhere near the fence. Our grandmothers did not plant these orange flowers only for their cheerfulness. Dried petals were tucked away in pantries and kitchen shelves as a source of care meant to last through winter, drawn out a pinch at a time and stirred into warmed oil whenever needed; this was, in its own humble way, the household laboratory of an earlier age.

Calendula oil is a special infusion made by letting the petals steep patiently in a carrier oil, a slow process that lets the flower release its treasures over weeks. Chief among them are carotenoids, the same natural compounds that give the petals their orange colour and are equally valued in skincare.

Calendula's gift is gentleness with a purpose. Think of it this way: irritated-looking skin is like an alarmed neighbour, and the carotenoids act like a soft, calming tone of voice. They do not suppress or ignore the issue, they simply accompany the skin as it finds its own balance again. It is a time-honoured choice for sensitive skin, and for skin that looks irritated, reddened or stressed by weather, water and daily work.

This matters in our workshop every single day. Hands worn down by detergents and sanitisers, feet toughened by new shoes, cuticles nicked raw by winter: these are exactly the moments when a calendula-enriched cream shows its quiet worth. Over the years we have watched countless customers' hands settle down under its steady, gentle influence, and this observation remains one of the simplest yet most valuable lessons our thirty-eight years in the workshop have taught us. This soothing effect is not limited to hands, either. Heels rubbed raw by new shoes, elbows dried out in winter, skin left sensitive after too much sun all benefit from creams containing calendula. Thanks to its delicate nature, it is one of the ingredients even the most sensitive skin tends to welcome without worry, from children to the elderly, whose skin turns sensitive with the changing seasons, which is exactly what makes it the shared care jar of an entire household.

At Ülker Sofuoğlu, we infuse calendula petals into cold-pressed base oils while keeping the entire process free of heat and harsh solvents. The flower is delicate, and our method honours that. As for texture, calendula oil lends our creams a light, velvety feel, spreading over skin without leaving a sticky or heavy film. Its scent is as gentle as the flower itself, faintly herbal with a sunny note, which turns daily care into a small everyday pleasure; some of our customers describe the light coolness and relief they feel after applying it as though they had just touched a fresh flower straight from the garden.

A suggestion from us: keep a calendula-enriched Hand & Foot Care Cream beside the kitchen sink. Skin that meets hot water and dish soap several times a day deserves a soothing answer just as often. On days when your hands feel tight or sensitive, apply the cream in a thin layer at frequent intervals; a little, applied regularly, makes far more difference than a lot applied rarely. In the evening, gently massaging this cream around the cuticles becomes a lovely ritual for hands winding down after a long day; an amount the size of a pea is usually enough for hands and nails. On tougher spots like heels and elbows, applying a slightly thicker layer and letting it sink in for a few minutes strengthens the soothing effect; repeated a few times a week, this simple step helps sensitive areas look more comfortable over time.

Some people confuse calendula with other similarly named botanical extracts, but what we use here is strictly an unadulterated maceration oil obtained through a cold process from the petals of the calendula flower itself. It should never be mistaken for a synthetic soothing ingredient, a clarity that matters for knowing exactly what you are putting on your skin, and one we insist on standing behind in every formula.

On storage: we recommend keeping your calendula cream in a cool spot away from direct sunlight, with the lid tightly closed. Carotenoids are sensitive to light, so keeping the jar in a closed cabinet or drawer rather than on a sunny windowsill helps preserve both its colour and its soothing effect for longer.

This humble flower from the garden feels like nature's own gentleness translated into skincare, a piece of simple wisdom we continue to carry into our formulas today with the same simplicity it has always had. Every skin is different; we recommend testing a small area before first use. If you would like to try calendula oil's soothing touch in our creams, we would be glad to welcome you at our shop.
